Series creator, Bryan Fuller promises to keep Fannibals guessing in season three with elements from three of the four Harris novels.  While staying true to the literature, he has indicated that he and the writing team intend to play with the timeline.  Seeing the introduction of Mason Verger and his infamous “disfigurement” already in season two, we can assume that Fuller’s plans will serve the series well.  “Season 3 is going to be a lot of fun because it’s going to be taking a lot of disparate elements from the novel Hannibal Rising and the novel Hannibal and mashing them up together as part of the thrust of the season. It’s going to be fun to bastardize two novels into one sort of Frankenstein season.”  The second half of season three will introduce the story arc of Red Dragon, including Francis Dolarhyde in episode 8.

Upon receiving the news that the series had been renewed for a third season, he revealed that every season’s finale has been written as a possible series finale, just in case,

“Every additional season is a bit of a gift, so we just want to make sure that we end things in a way that is satisfying for the audience in the event that we don’t get another season. That was also part of the reason to shore up the structure and get to Red Dragon in season three. Because so much of the tale of Hannibal Lecter and Will Graham was about seeding that novel and scattering those seeds across two seasons to set up the novel in a fun way. So there is a sense of like, oh, if we end on Red Dragon, there is a satisfying ending there. But preferably, we will go on and explore The Silence Of The Lambs and how that character, whether it’s Clarice Starling or ‘Shmarice Shmarling’ depending on how the rights shake out, which opens up a new chapter for Hannibal Lecter. The fun for us would be integrating Will Graham into the story of The Silence Of The Lambs.”  (denofgeek.com)
